Tune in, turn on, and disrupt The power of insubordination

Tune in, turn on, and disrupt The power of insubordinationTune in, turn on, and disrupt The power of insubordinationIt once was that climbing the corporate ranks was impossible without a healthy respect for authority. Toe the line, and you were rewarded with a promotion. It may have helped a year-end report, but for mora creative growth opportunities, businesses suffered in the long run. Todays recipe for corporate health and prosperity goes against the grain and calls for greater individual autonomy as well as limited authority among teamberaterins. But its a formula that works, and one that more companies should embrace.Take the story of Dick Boak, one of Martin Guitars most creative luthiers. A crafty music lover, Boak self-taught himself instrument making in the basement of his family home when he was only 12 years old. He followed his artistic skills to study visual arts in college before dropping out and working his way around the country before fate intervened in Nazareth, Pen nsylvania. It was there, behind the Martin Guitar headquarters, that Boak was caught by a foreman while rummaging for discarded wood scraps. Boak explained himself by showing two instruments he had already built with discarded wood which caught the eye of the head of the company, C.F. Martin III. He hired Boak immediately to build instruments for the company.Sounds like a Cinderella story, doesnt it? For most employees, it would hired by the CEO to do work you love, work that is recognized and praised by those around you. Yet less than a year after this momentous event, Boak was just as quickly fired.Martin Guitar, like so many other companies, was structured as a top-down hierarchy. The CEO made an impulsive hire, yet Boaks direct supervisor was an engineer hired after Boak joined the company. The designer and engineer came to a disagreement over design modifications for a new banjo model Boak believed the change would lead to structural quality issues his supervisor disagreed, and gave a direct order to proceed with the modification. Boak, motivated by the potential cost to the company for such a change, reported the issue to the personnel manager. Boak was dismissed the following morning for the insubordinate act of going over his bosss head. The shock and disillusionment Boak felt after losing his dream job were amplified by the awareness that the very actions that led his supervisor to fire him were made in the best interests of his employers future success. Doing the right thing should never be subordinated by following orders.Even though it meant going over the bosss head yet again, Boak made a creative appeal to C.F. Martin III a signed pen-and-ink drawing of Martins acclaimed D-28 model, with the inscription please consider this my reapplication for employment. Delighted with the gift, and appalled to learn of Boaks termination, Martin re-hired Boak to a new role producing designs for the factory gift shop, an effort that delivered a tenfold increase i n sales. Boaks career grew at Martin as he served as director of artist and public relations, developed the Signature Editions line of guitars and became historian-in-residence. He just retired from Martin in January 2018.As for the engineer who first terminated Boak, he lost his job a few years after Boak was rehired it seems the banjo model he worked on with Boak kept experiencing broken rims that resulted from the very design modification Boak refused to make. It created a significant quality issue for the company. This story provides us with terrific learning. One of the most important foundational principles for business leaders dedicated to great work culture is no single individual should have the authority to kill a good idea or to keep a bad idea alive.Instead, a business must create a culture that inspires creativity and does not punish brilliance and irreverence. The authority of individual bosses should be limited, and companies must create a space where it is panzerschra nk not to follow orders. In the world of hierarchical management, Boaks engineer supervisor had every authority to make a unilateral decision based on Boaks actions. The operating rule of thumb in those environments continues to be one of keep your mouth shut, and do what youre told.If the most knowledgeable voices in a company regardless of job title can be systematically silenced, then an organization is designed to embrace structured ignorance. And its probably just a matter of time before such ignorance creates a difficult, and hopefully not fatal, business crisis.

9 things smart people do to fix work mistakes

9 things smart people do to fix work mistakes9 things smart people do to fix work mistakesIt happens to the best of us No matter how much you plan or prepare, there are times when you just spectacularly mess up a pitch, proposal or gasp, even an interview. The first order of business dont panic. Nothing is permanent, elend even screwups. Things can shift and people can move on, but it takes some effort to read the room to understand how to guide that along. So how do you know if its time to save your reputation or if youre better off beating a hasty retreat?1. Sit tight and plan to deal with itThe worst possible thing you can do at the worst possible moment is leave in a huff or cloud of embarrassment. Try to calm down and continue or regain your train of thought, or at the very least excuse yourself before leaving the room. Take measured steps and ask if you can continue the discussion later, or tomorrow. You will not be at your best logic in the midst of a fight-or-flight response.2. Assess the situationFirst, take stock of the potential professional carnage. Did you really mess up as badly as you think you did? Ask a trusted colleague or mentor to walk through the situation again- it might not be as bad as you think. If it turns out not to be entirely awful, follow up the next day.3. Add the personal touchWhen possible, try to reschedule another meeting. Pick up the phone so you can immediately smooth over any potential awkwardness, or send a polite but conversational email or DM suggesting you meet again to clarify some issues. Be friendly. Be genuinely humble if you did goof in some way, but explain in no uncertain terms that while you might have messed up a point or two, overall you can fix whatever needs repairing. And then leave it at that. Fussing too much will further erode your counterparts confidence that you can do what you promised. And it probably goes without saying, but if you promise to fix something, you should do just that.4. Learn from your m istakesOkay. You goofed. Who doesnt? Hopefully, it isnt a regular thing. Once you realize that you messed up, its time to fess up as well, says Steven Grant, VP of Operations forEnergy Solutions Direct. Owning your mistake is the best way to heal a situation,Instead of running flat-out to try to correct everyone elses perceptions, instead step back and consider what you could do better next time, especially when it comes to a failed pitch or business deal. While it is of course important to try and save the deal, it is typically much more important for you to understand WHY the pitch went so poorly and learn from these mistakes, says Grant. A bad pitch is one thing, a life-time of bad pitches is quite another. 5. Give it timePay attention to the cues given by the person or corporation youve wronged, because even in professional settings, people heal at different rates. Oftentimes, it is better to try and salvage immediately, however, sometimes it is best to let yourself and other pa rty(ies) step back from the situation and revisit, Grant says. And in case youre wondering how long you have to apologize or rectify a situation, unless there was a specific deadline, there really is no time limit on apology and sometimes it takes a relatively, significant amount of time to repair a relationship says Grant. 6. Take the high roadEven if you have no hope of ever working with someone - even your boss again, you should probably apologize and in person if possible. Grant says You should always do what is right, regardless of what you THINK the future holds. However, if you have already apologizedtwice, this should be enough and over-apologizingcan simply annoy the person. 7. Use a wingman or wingwomanDespite what theyve always said, you know that your parents probably did have a favorite. If youve managed to irk your boss but still know that your pitch has great merit, consider backing away and asking a trusted colleague or project partner to plead your case or at least re-pitch. Include your name and contact information on the pitch or deck, but make it clear that youve learned your lesson. In this way, your ideas and creativity will still take center stage, even if you spent the early part of the project with your foot planted firmly in your mouth. 8. Put yourself in their shoes and think of the big pictureAnd if youre on the receiving end of the goof of the century, try to remember what its like to be on the other side of the equation. If someone messes up a pitch yet I know has a willingness to learn, I will coach him on what he did right, what he did wrong, let him take a day to regroup and try it again, Grant says.9. Let it goooooNo matter how sincere your apology or clever your repair plan is, there are going to be people who choose to rebuff your efforts or completely lose faith in you. Sometimes the best business move is to realize that you cant change their minds and just move on graciously.

How to Accommodate Nursing Mothers

How to Accommodate Nursing MothersHow to Accommodate Nursing MothersHealthcare legislation, effective on March 23, 2010, amended the ritterlich Labor Standards Act to require employers to accommodate nursing mothers with a lactation area for expressing milk during their childs first year of life. Legislation Legislation for nursing mothers that is currently in place in24 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, will supersede the Federal legislation if their requirements for employer accommodation of nursing mothers offer more stringent accommodation. Forty-five states, the District of Columbia, and the Virgin Islands have laws that specifically allow women to breastfeed in any public or private location. While exact details will be worked out by the Department of Labor, employers might want to look to the policy for nursing mothers already adopted in Oregon, since this was the model for the adoption of the workplace accommodation for nursing mothers portion of the legis lation. Earlier, we also recommended a lactation or breastfeeding policy that closely approximates the provisions of this law. If you had adopted this lactation policy, you are, for the most part, covered under this new nursing mothers legislation. According to Alston Birds labor and employment practice group, the new legislation, amends the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) to require employers to provide time for nursing mothers to express breast milk. Specifically, Section 4207 of the new law, Reasonable Break Time for Nursing Mothers, provides that, for a period of up to one year following a childs birth, employers must give an employee reasonable break time each time she needs to express milk. The law also requires employers to provide a location, other than a bathroom, shielded from view and free from intrusion where the employee can express milk. Employers that are exempt from the legislation are those with 50 or fewer employees who can prove that accommodation of nursing moth ers will, according to Alston Bird, create undue hardship by causing significant expense or difficulty in relation to the size, financial resources, nature or structure of the business. While the legislation states that the time provided is unpaid, the definition of reasonable break time and other details such as the exemption of a small employer because of undue hardship are undefined. The interpretation of the legislation for employers will be decided by the DOL. In the meantime, labor attorneys at Alston Bird suggest that you work with nursing mothers to accommodate their needs by providing time, a private space, and a supportive work climate. Nursing Mother Space Needs Employers will experience the most difficulty with providing a space that meets requirements. In one business currently, as an example, a private, handicapped-accessible restroom that accommodated one employee at a time was designated for nursing mothers. Accommodating only one employee and having a locking door, a shower, a sink, a toilet, a comfortable chair, and fresh towels, the employer considered the space more than adequate for the needs of a nursing mother. Under the new legislation, this space may no longer qualify as it is a restroom. One hopes the Department of Labor will recognize the difference between a public, multiple employee-accommodating restrooms and a private, well-appointed space, also a restroom, which accommodates nursing mothers well. The United States Breastfeeding Committee provides creative solutions about options for space accommodation. These suggested solutions include spaces as diverse as a work vehicle with privacy panels to block outside view and a space in a mall store shared by several neighboring businesses. Like all aspects of health legislation, time, governmental agency guidelines and directives, and court decisions as a result of lawsuits will establish the final determinations for employers. Get ahead of the curve on workplace accommodation for nursing mothers.

Taking Showers in Air Force Basic Training

Taking Showers in Air Force Basic TrainingTaking Showers in Air Force Basic TrainingThe skills obtained from just a few short months at basic military training in any branch of service is astonishing. One that you will immediately notice is how quickly you learn how to take a shower. Daily hygiene is required when attending any military training program. You will be required to clean yourself each day as you tend to get ratzu sich dirty and sweaty throughout the day during the constant movement that is Basic Military Training (Air Force), Boot Camp (Navy and USMC), or Basic Combat Training (Army). The military is a cross section of society of people from all over the nation, different socioeconomic groups, different ages and races. Many have different customs, traditions, and habits when it comes to cleanliness. One thing is for certain, the military takes this diverse group and turns them into a unit of military members with new but the same habits, discipline, and common challenges that unite the group into a team. One of the many things that conform to military standards of hygiene is taking daily showers. You will shower every night (including the first night ) at Air Force Basic Military Training (AFBMT). For the first couple of weeks, your shower will be very short (about two minutes). You will learn to wash quickly, and not waste time. You will find that the cool shower will be refreshing during the heat and humidity of the summer and a warm shower will be equally as nice during the colder months of the winter. In Air Force basic training, there is no privacy for the showers. At the end of the day, you will be tired. Too tired to worry about being naked in a shower with 20 other people who are equally focused on cleaning themselves in a quick 1-2 minute shower time. The shower is one large room, with several shower-heads. Everyone showers together. Dont let this worry you, however. Most recruits Ive talked to worried about this *before* basic training, b ut they all tell me *after* basic training, that it turned out not to be such a big deal. For the first couple of weeks, youre being yelled at, even in the shower, so you dont worry about anything other than getting the shower finished as fast as you can. After the first couple of weeks, when you get more timeand less yelling, its no longer a big deal. You will quickly become more efficient with your time. Here is an amusing story from a father of Air Force daughters. Before basic training, it would take my daughters a minimum of two hours to get ready to go anywhere. They used to get up two hours before they had to leave for school, each and every morning. If we traveled on the road, I would always have to wake them up in the motel a full two hours before I wanted to get on the road again. Getting ready for the world for a teenager can be challenging if the perfect hair, makeup, and breakfast are required before leaving the house. My daughter Christina was the first one to come ho me on her first leave (vacation) afterbasic trainingand technical school. The next morning, I wanted to take her out to breakfast. She woke up (on her own) at 0600 (600 AM), and was ready to go 30 minutes later. When Jeanie returned home three weeks later, it was the same thing. I never thought I would see the day where they could prepare for the day in less than 30 minutes. Not only were they ready to go and quite presentable, but their beds were also made before we went out the door something else I never thought Id see. Serving in the military will change you in many ways. You may find that waking up early is much easier than before Basic Military Training. You may find that eating a full meal can occur in a few minutes as well as daily showers. And you will have the uncanny ability to sleep anywhere. You will also react in crisis situations a much calmer thinker. Want to Know More About Air Force Basic Training? Surviving Air Force Basic Training
